
Israeli and New York-based choreographer Deganit Shemy studied Art at the Kalisher School of Art, and dance in the movement department of the Rubin Academy of Music and Dance.
Her critically-acclaimed choreography has been performed throughout Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and New York since 2002. Her first solo was presented at The Other Dance Festival and The International Exposure Festival at the Susanne Dallal Center in Tel Aviv, where she also won a 2003 Gvanim Bemachol Award for her trio ALUM. Ms. Shemy was named Young Choreographer of the Year by the Israeli Ministry of Education in 2004, and won the 2003 Choreographer Award from the American-Israeli Cultural Foundation.
Since re-locating to New York, Ms. Shemy has been an Artist-in-Residence at Dance New Amsterdam, Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Movement Research, and Dance Theatre Workshop. In addition, Ms. Shemy received space grants from the Harkness Dance Center at the 92nd Street Y in 2005 and 2008. She has also been awarded a 2008 NYFA Fellowship grant. Her choreography, IODINE was presented at Performance Space 122 January 2008. In April 2008, IODINE won the AWARD show for best choreography (curated by Neta Pulvermacher at Joyce SOHO).
IODINE was presented in the Singapore Fringe Festival in January 2009.Ms. Shemy was selected as a 2008-09 Sugar Salon Artist, a mentorship and residency program developed and administered by the Williamsburg Art neXus (WAX) in partnership with the Department of Dance of Barnard College. The excerpt from the developing piece was presented in Baryshnikov Arts Center in January 2009.
Recently, Ms. Shemy was commissioned to present her new full evening length work, ARENA, at Dance Theater Workshop, on April 16-18, 2009. The piece was partly developed in residence at Baryshnikov Arts Center and an expanded version of ARENA will be performed at the inaugural Ringling International Arts Festival in Sarasota, Florida on October 7-11, 2009. Prior to the performances, the company will tour to Florida for a two-week residency at FSU in Tallahassee. In addition Ms. Shemy was invited by DMAC - Duo Multicultural Arts Center to present two new short pieces in June 2009.
Future events include creating new pieces with Barnard College students in fall 2009 and with Sarah Lawrence students in February 2010.
